F-type 1937 boxcar
art. MM001A
The F-type boxcar has been one of the most popular wagons in the FS fleet for more than 60 years, from the late 1930s through the 1980s and 1990s. Because of this, and its widespread use throughout the Italian peninsula, it is perhaps the most recognizable wagon in the entire Italian State Railways rolling stock. The F-type 1937 boxcar was one of the first made in an all-metal box with the use of wood limited to the loading bed. The presence of the upper grates and lower adjustable airers (also on the headers), allowed the loading of a very wide variety of goods, including perishable products such as fruit.
The braking system was present by design, of the Breda type with vacuum/load and goods/travelers device. The version with a carriage is offered with the same features under code MM002A. Despite the very long operational life of this wagon, cosmetic changes were very limited in time and mainly concerned the suspension assembly (bushings and leaf springs) and the addition of the through steam pipe. As for the bushings, they were originally produced with oil bushings and then ended their careers with roller bushings.A noteworthy modification was made after the war, when some wagons were converted to passenger service to make up for the lack of passenger stock due to bombing. Outwardly, the most notable difference was the presence of suitable stairs for passengers to climb, while the interior was modified by adding simple wooden benches. They were later converted or demolished.
